If your child is between four and eight and has never been on skates, start with Learn to Play. It teaches skating from scratch. If they can already skate unassisted, Mites is the next step. From there, kids move up by age: Squirts, Peewee, Bantams, and U16.
It depends on the program. Learn to Play teaches skating from the first lesson. Every other division assumes your child can move on the ice without holding the wall. They don't have to be polished. They need to be on their feet.
Learn to Play accepts children as young as four. Most kids who start that early spend one or two seasons there before moving into Mites.
Yes. All LYHA programs are open to all kids regardless of gender.
No. We have families from surrounding counties. If you can get to LaHaye Ice Center, you're in range.
Age at the start of the season is the primary factor. Learn to Play: 4 to 8. Mites: 6 to 8. Squirts: 9 to 10. Peewee: 11 to 12. Bantams: 13 to 14. U16: 14 to 15.

House hockey stays local. Learn to Play, Mites, and Squirts practice at LaHaye and play jamborees at nearby rinks. The focus is development.
Travel hockey plays real games against other clubs across the region. Peewee, Bantams, and U16 have away weekends and occasional overnight trips. The schedule is heavier and the commitment is bigger.
Yes. We welcome transfers. Bring your USA Hockey registration number. For travel divisions, the standard tryout process applies.
No. Players are rostered on one team per season.

Ice time, coaching, and USA Hockey and PVAHA registration. It does not cover personal gear or travel costs for away games and overnight trips.
Yes. Cost should not be the reason a Lynchburg kid can't play. Ask any board member. The conversation is confidential.
House divisions pay jamboree fees as the schedule firms up. Travel divisions pay their own gas and hotel costs for away weekends. These are paid by families and vary by season.
Helmet with cage, neck guard, shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey pants, shin guards, skates, gloves, and a stick. The jersey is covered by registration. A full gear list comes with your welcome email.
Not if you use our loaner program. We have used equipment available to borrow, enough to get a child through a first season. Ask when you register. First come, first served.
For used gear, Play It Again Sports in Roanoke is about an hour away. For new gear, Pure Hockey in Morrisville, NC is about three hours, just outside Raleigh. Both are linked on each division page.
The staff at Pure Hockey can fit your child properly. For used gear, bring the child to Play It Again so they can try on skates in person.

Schedules are sent to families once finalized each August. Travel schedules are published before the season begins and shared directly with families.
