Before joining a team or signing up for a full program, most kids skate the public sessions at the rink. This page explains where to go, what to expect, and how to get your child on the ice for the first time.
LaHaye Ice Center is in Lynchburg, right on the campus of Liberty University. It is the home rink for the Lynchburg Coyotes (LYHA) and many Liberty hockey programs.
Before heading to the rink, check the LaHaye Ice Center schedule to see what sessions are scheduled. This is the quickest way to find out what is available right now. The calendar lists Public Skates, Stick and Pucks, and Youth Open Hockey with dates and times. If something is on the calendar, show up and you are good to go.

Public Skate is just for skating. There is no hockey. You can rent skates right at the rink, so you do not need to bring your own. The only thing you need is a skate ticket and warm clothes. Great practice for getting comfortable on the ice.
A casual drop-in session. Bring a helmet, a stick, and gloves. Pucks are provided by the rink. Just show up, buy in, and take shots.
Full hockey gear is required: helmet with cage, gloves, skates, stick, and all protective equipment. Youth Open Hockey is casual drop-in ice time, not structured shifts. Most sessions turn into relaxed games with kids and coaches, and all skill levels are welcome.

If there is nothing on LaHaye's calendar right now, the next best place is Lancerlot Sportsplex in Vinton, VA (about 55 miles west of Lynchburg). They list sessions on a weekly basis year-round.
